Reformer or Mat Pilates: the differences and which to choose
Reformer and Matwork come from the same method, but they feel different. Here's what changes and how to tell which one suits you.

The same method, two tools
Pilates is a training method based on control, breathing, precision and work on the centre of the body. Joseph Pilates developed it both on the mat with your body weight (Matwork) and with machines such as the Reformer. The principles are the same: the tool changes, and with it the feeling.
The Reformer: resistance and support
On the Reformer the springs can make an exercise more intense or support you. The sliding carriage adds control and stability work and allows a huge range of variations, including standing, kneeling or side-lying.
- Great for feeling the correct execution straight away, thanks to the machine's guidance.
- Easy to adapt: the resistance changes in seconds.
- At KLYN it's practised in groups of up to 4 people, across three levels.
Matwork: your body is the equipment
In Matwork there are no springs to help you: your own body creates the resistance and stability. That makes it a great way to build core strength and movement awareness.
- It strengthens the foundations of the method, which also help on the Reformer.
- You can repeat the exercises at home.
- Every exercise has a simpler and a more challenging version.
Which should you choose?
Neither discipline is better in absolute terms: it depends on what you're looking for.
- Choose the Reformer if you want very guided, varied work with adjustable difficulty, or if you like the idea of training on a machine with the attention of a small group.
- Choose Matwork if you want to strengthen the foundations, work with your body weight and bring the method into your routine at home.
- Combine them if you can: they complement each other well. Matwork builds control, the Reformer tests it with resistance and instability.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Reformer harder than Matwork?
Not necessarily: the springs can also help you. Many people find Matwork more challenging precisely because there's no support.
Can I start straight on the Reformer?
Yes: at KLYN you start at Beginners level, designed for people who have never used the Reformer.
