Reformer Pilates for beginners: what to expect from your first class

The Reformer can look complicated the first time you see it. In reality, one class is enough to feel at ease: here's what happens, step by step.

What the Reformer is

The Reformer is the machine designed by Joseph Pilates: a carriage that slides on rails, attached to springs of different resistance, with a footbar and straps for hands and feet. The springs don't just make an exercise harder: they often support you and guide you into the right movement. That's why the Reformer also suits people who haven't trained in a while.

You can read more on the Reformer Pilates page.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, close-fitting sportswear: loose clothes can catch in the springs and make it harder for the instructor to see your posture.
  • Non-slip socks: on the Reformer you work without shoes.
  • Nothing else: we provide the water.

How your first class works

Arrive a few minutes early: we'll show you the studio, you'll settle in and meet your instructor. Classes last 50 minutes in groups of up to 4 people, so the instructor can really follow everyone.

You start by learning how to get on and off the Reformer safely and how to adjust the springs and footbar. Then you work on breathing and activating the centre of the body, before moving on to exercises for legs, arms, back and abs. You finish with a few stretches.

You don't need to remember everything: the instructor guides you with simple cues and suggests the variations that suit you. You'll find all the details on the Your first class page.

Which level to choose

At KLYN there are three levels: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. We recommend starting at Beginners even if you're sporty or have done Pilates elsewhere: the Reformer takes technique and control more than strength, and every studio has its own habits. After your first classes your instructor will tell you when you're ready to move up.

If you're unsure, the level quiz gives you a suggestion in a minute.

How to book

Choose a Beginners class from the timetable and confirm your spot in the KLYN app. If it's your first time, the First experience offer is the easiest way to get to know the studio and the method: see Your first class for the details. Remember that classes must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance.
